Grabbing a cup of java in one of our local favorite gathering places, I happened upon an interesting gentleman. His name is Billy Geffon. Billy was kind enough to allow me to interview him, and you can listen to that on our site. While interviewing Billy, he had some great comments about one of his friends, Roy R. Neuberger (yes the Neuberger of Neuberger and Berman). Billy is building a home in Watersound and is an avid collector of art. He recently purchased a painting by Paige Summer when Paige had her art showing in Ceruleans before CHristmas. Billy spoke fondly of his friend Roy and offered an interesting and important piece of advice he received from Roy….”only collect and purchase artwork from living artists, they are the ones that need the money!”. Only when I was able to get to my computer and google Roy R. Neuberger did I realize the impact of that statement. The following is the biography of Mr. Neuberger. It is a bit lengthy, but if you are the least bit interested in the art world, it is a must to read:
| Biography |
| Roy Neuberger was born in 1903, and founded the $50 billion money management firm of Neuberger & Berman in 1939.
In his early years, he dropped out of New York University to pursue a career in business instead. He worked at the Manhattan department store, B. Altmans, where he learned his business skills selling paintings. This developed his life long love of art. After Altman’s, Neuberger went to Europe at the age of 20, and went to live in Paris, during the bohemian Roaring Twenties. He painted and studied art during this period. He was taken aback by the biography of Vincent Van Gogh, which he read in 1928 and was startled to realise that most obscure artists lived in poverty. He was determined to give the artists of his day a break, a chance at fame and worthy recognition. To do this, Neuberger vowed to use his business skills to aquire wealth, and thus to enable him to become a patron of artists. He went back to the U.S. and went to work on Wall Street in 1929, seven months before Black Tuesday. He shorted RCA stock right through the Great Depression, which built up enough wealth for him to found the money management firm of Neuberger and Berman in 1939. In 1950 he established the Guardian Mutual Fund, one of the first no-load mutual funds. In his 68 years on Wall Street he has never had a losing year. Amongst the artists propelled to fame through Neubergers purchases and promotion were Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Jack Levine, Edward Hopper and Milton Avery. Neuberger has donated works to many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art , both in New York. He was friends with Nelson Rockefeller, who was also an avid art collector, with whom he co-founded the Neuberger Museum of Art. |

As thoughts turn back to remember those loved ones who are no longer with us
and as we look forward to 2007 we need to toast Life and our good fortune.

The holidays are always a special time for family and friends to gather and enjoy the festivities. Last night on December 13th, Debbie Weant-Lane (Big Mamma as she is known by the locals) threw a party to honor “her” artists, as she lovingly calls them. Debbie is the owner of Big Mamma’s Hula Girl Gallery located in Grayton on Hwy 283. Her shop is full of fun and eclectic art created by local art celebrities. I am hoping to have some of the interviews I did with the artists attending the party. You will be able to hear those on Happ’nin Interviews shortly.
Back to the party and Big Mamma’s: Some of the attendees were Phil Kiser, who was selected artist of the year for Walton County in 2006. Phil creates a uniquie type of stained glass. Actually it is a mosaic process of broken glass, and his designs are oh so interesting. Ed and Sally who are two fairly new artists in the 30A scene and have a working studio located in the Shoppes of Grayton; Bob Steeno and his wife, who play the sounds of 30A (The Steenos) at Pandora’s Restaurant on weekends; Mac Corley who is a very talented metal artist; Bill and Betsy Evett, Bill’s latest CD features songs that he has written for the Seaside Chapel: Dwight Ward, a prolific potter who can be seen frequently in the Gulf Place artist kiosk, Diane Page who creates beautiful jewelry from sea glass and has a second home in the Bahamas where she finds that glass; Robin Broderson and Mark Parding, who are husband and wife team creating beautiful works of art with different orientations; Alice Bargeron, who is multitalented with visual and vocal art; Allison Tanner, who creates wonderful paintings and also helps us all with her framing abilities at Big Mamma’s Hula Girl Gallery; Deborah Wheeler , who is also a celeberty in her own right. She is a writer for the Walton Sun and adds such flavor to our local newspaper. Big Mamma’s home was filled with the art that she dearly loves and sells in her shop. She also creates, and I was wearing one of her fantastic creations around my neck. You have not experienced 30A until you stop and enjoy Big Mamma’s Hula Girl Shop in Grayton Beach.

Do you like leeks?
I love them. And when they are paired with their good friend
Mr. Potato Head they are really really good.
I had a delicious bowl of Potato leek soup with croutons
that fit the bill for the light but hearty fare that I prefer.
The soup agreed with the glass of Aussie red and the basket
of breads featuring the peteit corn muffins on the side. Yummmmmm
The Fish out of Water Restaurant is located in WaterColor on 30A.
