I just happen to be in the right spot and was personally invited to join a friend and attend a very informal writer’s group.

Now, I have never professionally or otherwise written anything that I believe people would pay good money to read, but that is one of my secret dreams. I think watching Sex and the City for the entire three or four year episodes left me longing to be able to put my thoughts on paper and make it so interesting that others would be yearning to read the next paragraph.

There is so much power in words, and it is true that the written word is assumed to be the truth. The group was a total of eight interesting souls who ranged from professional writers to myself. It was electrifying to hear some speak of their “publishers” and others discussing how to get their manuscripts to “people in the know”. This small group has inspired me to the extent that, I went home and the very next morning sat down and began to write a short story.

I am now thinking about trying to turn it into a short book. Who knows, maybe even a short novel. If anyone out there has been secretly dreaming of writing the next “Harry Potter”, come and join us. We, and I like that sound, we meet the second Tuesday of the month at the Great Southern Cafe in Seaside around 5:00 pm. You might even see Ernest in the background with his Fidora and a small notebook in hand.

Quincy Toy Store is taking it a step further. THis coming First Friday (July 6th) will be for the young artist. Quincy’s staff has developed budding young artists within their family and they are going to showcase this developing art. Take your time to come out and view our young people’s creations. You might even get lucky and be able to purchase an interesting piece. I found a young girls artwork last First Friday and have it hanging in a special place in my Picasso Moon for all to view.

You would think that I am an artist, the way I am always writing about them. I suppose, if I could be anything with the swish of a wand, that is what I would suggest to the “Fairy God Mother”.

Friday, January 5, 2007, was the beginning of a month long event called Escape to Create “A Celebration of Art, Life and Community”, in Seaside Florida on Scenic Hwy 30A. Escape to Create is a program of The Seaside Institute. All Escape to Create events are produced for the enjoyment of the community at no charge. We attended the First Friday Art Walk and were captured by the display of such unique art being shown in Ruskin Place, in the heart of Seaside.

One of the jewels that shown brightly was a “glass raygun” created by artist Claire Lieberman. Claire is able to take molten glass and fashion it into a nostalgic raygun which, along with being a pleasing piece of artwork, it also brings back those memories of youth and carefree days that we have closed in our past pages of life. I am hoping to interview Claire sometime this month while she is here in SEaside. You can view and purchase one of her works of art at Eileen West Gallery in Seaside.

There will be many events to put on your calendar which are associated with the Escape to Create program.

Saturday, January 13…..Artist Presentation….The Seaside Repertory Theatre 7pm

Thursday, January 25…..Artist Reading……….The SEaside Repertory Theatre 7pm

Friday, January 26…….Escape to Create Artist’s Reception..Eileen West Gallery 5-8pm

Saturday, January 27…..Artist Booksigning………Seaside’s Sundog Books 3pm

Sunday, January 28…..Artist Readings……………The Seaside Repertory Theatre 3pm

Grabbing a cup of java in one of our local favorite gathering places, I happened upon an interesting gentleman. His name is Billy Geffon. Billy was kind enough to allow me to interview him, and you can listen to that on our site. While interviewing Billy, he had some great comments about one of his friends, Roy R. Neuberger (yes the Neuberger of Neuberger and Berman). Billy is building a home in Watersound and is an avid collector of art. He recently purchased a painting by Paige Summer when Paige had her art showing in Ceruleans before CHristmas. Billy spoke fondly of his friend Roy and offered an interesting and important piece of advice he received from Roy….”only collect and purchase artwork from living artists, they are the ones that need the money!”. Only when I was able to get to my computer and google Roy R. Neuberger did I realize the impact of that statement. The following is the biography of Mr. Neuberger. It is a bit lengthy, but if you are the least bit interested in the art world, it is a must to read:

Biography

Roy Neuberger was born in 1903, and founded the $50 billion money management firm of Neuberger & Berman in 1939.

In his early years, he dropped out of New York University to pursue a career in business instead. He worked at the Manhattan department store, B. Altmans, where he learned his business skills selling paintings. This developed his life long love of art.

After Altman’s, Neuberger went to Europe at the age of 20, and went to live in Paris, during the bohemian Roaring Twenties. He painted and studied art during this period. He was taken aback by the biography of Vincent Van Gogh, which he read in 1928 and was startled to realise that most obscure artists lived in poverty. He was determined to give the artists of his day a break, a chance at fame and worthy recognition.

To do this, Neuberger vowed to use his business skills to aquire wealth, and thus to enable him to become a patron of artists. He went back to the U.S. and went to work on Wall Street in 1929, seven months before Black Tuesday. He shorted RCA stock right through the Great Depression, which built up enough wealth for him to found the money management firm of Neuberger and Berman in 1939.

In 1950 he established the Guardian Mutual Fund, one of the first no-load mutual funds. In his 68 years on Wall Street he has never had a losing year.

Amongst the artists propelled to fame through Neubergers purchases and promotion were Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Jack Levine, Edward Hopper and Milton Avery. Neuberger has donated works to many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art , both in New York.

He was friends with Nelson Rockefeller, who was also an avid art collector, with whom he co-founded the Neuberger Museum of Art.
